Compression test (and tensile tests)
Vertical and horizontal compression and tensile tests are a crucial part of verifying materials, products, and packaging.
Stacking boxes, pallets, and crates can generate high compression forces. Packaging and contents may get damaged, or a stack of boxes might collapse, potentially causing significant material damage or personal injury.
We also perform tensile strength testing for products.

Are you looking for the guarantee for sturdy, reliable products and packaging?
Our test lab specializes in compression tests to optimally assess the compressive and tensile strength of your materials, products and packaging. These essential tests help your business avoid potential damage, delays, and liability risks—resulting in lower costs and happier customers.
Specialization in ISTA (Amazon) Certifications
Do you have to deal with logistics requirements or export to large platforms such as Amazon? Our horizontal compression bench perfectly simulates real situations, such as dents in stacked cans on pallets. With these specific tests you can effortlessly meet the strictest international requirements.
ASTM
Packaging tests often follow ASTM standards. These standards provide a framework for conducting various mechanical tests, including horizontal compression and tensile tests.
This testing determines the strength and deformation properties of materials under horizontal compression or tensile loads. It applies to packaging materials, composites, metals, and other solid substances.
Standards
Key ASTM standards that may apply:
- ASTM E8: For tensile testing of metals.
- ASTM D642: For determining the compression resistance of packaging containers, components, and unit loads.
- ASTM D695: For compression testing of plastic materials.
- ASTM D638: For tensile testing of plastic materials.
Specifications of our testing equipment
Our compression tester can perform tests up to 1,000 kg according to ISO, ASTM, and ISTA standards. It measures the failure load of boxes, pallets, or crates and determines how high they can be safely stacked. A compression test helps reduce costs by preventing damage, delays, or liabilities and guarantees the quality and compression strength of the packaging.
Specifications:
- Maximum compression force: 1,000 kg
- Dimensions: 1100 x 800 x 1300 mm
- Displacement: 65 mm - 1500 mm
- Test speed: 1 to 3 mm/min
We also have a precision tensile and compression bench that provides 0.5% accuracy for forces up to 100 kg. This enables highly accurate material comparisons, both in compression and tensile tests. It is also possible to program tensile and compression cycles to simulate aging.
Specifications:
- Maximum tensile and compression force: 100 kg
- Dimensions: 400 x 500 x 1000 mm
- Displacement: 0.1 mm to 750 mm
- Test speed: 0.05 to 1.270 mm/min
Compression testing at Sebert
With our compression tester we can perform pressure tests up to 1,000 kg in accordance with the requirements described in the ISO, ASTM and ISTA standards. The compression tester determines the collapse load of boxes, pallets or crates and how high they may be stacked.
A compression test saves costs due to damage, delay or liability and is a guarantee for the quality and compressive strength of the packaging.
