IPX9-test

An IPX9 classification indicates that a product is resistant to powerful water jets at high temperature. This test verifies whether the enclosure or housing allows any water ingress during intensive cleaning with hot, high-pressure spray.

This rating is essential for products used in demanding environments — such as industrial machinery, vehicles, or installations that undergo frequent high-pressure cleaning.

IEC 60529 standard

At Sebert Group, we test products in accordance with the IEC 60529 standard to determine whether they meet the IPX9 classification. This ensures that a product can remain underwater for a specific time without sustaining functional damage. Our tests help manufacturers improve product reliability and meet certification requirements.

The IPX9 test is part of the IEC 60529 standard and simulates extreme cleaning conditions using hot water under pressure. The test method varies slightly depending on the size of the product.

Small Products

  • Temperature: 85 °C (±5 °C)
  • Water flow: 15 L/min (±1 L/min)
  • Spray angles: 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°
  • Rotating table: 5 revolutions/min (±1 r/min)
  • Duration: 30 seconds per spray position

The product is placed on a rotating platform and sprayed from four angles with hot, high-pressure water. The combination of rotation and water intensity simulates a rigorous industrial cleaning cycle.

Large Products

  • Position: Placed in normal operating orientation
  • Distance from nozzle: 175 mm (±25 mm)
  • Temperature: 85 °C (±5 °C)
  • Water flow: 15 L/min (±1 L/min)
  • Spray coverage: All practically possible angles
  • Duration: 1 minute per m², with a minimum of 3 minutes

For larger objects, the spray is applied manually or with an automated spray arm to ensure complete surface coverage.

Why test for IPX9?

In sectors where equipment is routinely cleaned with steam or high-pressure systems, an IPX9 classification is often required. Applications include:

  • Industrial machinery in food processing environments
  • Vehicle electronics and control panels exposed to jet cleaning
  • Outdoor installations with heavy maintenance requirements
  • Wash-down areas and wet production lines

Testing your product for IPX9 ensures compliance with demanding standards and helps prevent water-related damage or failure.

How Does the IPX7 Test Work?

An IPX7 rating means that a product can be fully submerged in water at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes without allowing harmful amounts of water to enter. It’s important to note that this does not imply permanent waterproofing — prolonged exposure to water can still cause damage.

While IPX7 only guarantees temporary protection, it offers essential reassurance for products used in wet environments or those that may be dropped in water. For products that must operate continuously underwater, an IPX8 classification is required.

The test involves the following elements:

  • Test method: 30-minute immersion tank test
  • Depth: The lowest point of the enclosure must be 1 meter below the water surface
  • Conditions: Still water (no flow or turbulence)
  • Post-test inspection: The product is examined for water ingress and checked for functional integrity

Test Chamber Specifications

Our testing facilities feature advanced equipment to ensure accurate and repeatable results. Chamber specifications:

  • Internal tank dimensions: Ø780 mm × H1250 mm
  • Water pressure: 0.1 bar at 1 meter depth

If you need to test a larger product, we’re happy to explore tailored solutions to simulate appropriate test conditions.
