IPX6-test

Electronic devices, industrial enclosures, and consumer electronics used outdoors or in humid environments must be able to endure harsh weather and heavy-duty use. The IPX6 test is a crucial method for assessing whether a product is protected against powerful water jets under high pressure.

Internationally recognized standard

At Sebert Group, we perform IPX6 testing in compliance with the internationally recognized IEC 60529 standard. This protocol determines whether a product remains safe and functional when exposed to intense water jets from all directions. Our test facilities offer precise simulations to ensure your product meets the highest quality standards.

What Does an IPX6 Rating Mean?

A product with an IPX6 rating offers robust protection against powerful water jets, which includes:

  • Heavy rainfall and storm-like conditions, such as wind-driven rain and intense splashing
  • High-speed water exposure, like road spray or maritime splash zones

No full protection against water ingress

However, IPX6 does not mean the product is fully waterproof. For devices that must operate continuously in wet conditions or underwater, higher ratings such as IPX7 (temporary immersion) or IPX8 (continuous immersion) are required. For high-pressure spray cleaning (e.g., with a pressure washer), IPX9 is the correct standard.

Why Is an IPX6 Rating Important?

An IPX6 rating is essential for devices and enclosures exposed to heavy rain, aggressive spray cleaning, or powerful water jets.

By certifying your product to IPX6, you demonstrate that it’s fit for demanding environments and better protected against moisture-related failure.

How Does the IPX6 Test Work?

The IPX6 test evaluates whether a product can resist powerful water jets, such as those from storm-like rainfall or hose-down cleaning procedures. The product must remain fully operational and free of water ingress after being subjected to high-pressure spray.

Following the test, the product is inspected to assess any signs of water ingress and to verify continued functionality.

A product that passes the IPX6 test is resistant to powerful water jets but is not designed for pressure washer treatment or immersion. For long-term submersion, IPX7 or IPX8 ratings are required. For resistance to high-pressure cleaning equipment, IPX9 is the appropriate classification.

The test includes the following elements:

  • Test method: Hose test at a distance of 2.5 to 3 meters
  • Water flow: 100 liters per minute
  • Test duration: 1 minute per m², with a minimum of 3 minutes
  • Coverage: The product must be sprayed from all practical directions — either by rotating it or moving around it

Test Setup Specifications

  • Test area (outdoor): Unlimited
  • Water flow: 100 L/min (±5%)
