IPX5-test
Electronic devices and enclosures used outdoors or in humid environments must be able to withstand low-pressure water jets. The IPX5 test is a standardized method used to determine whether a product is protected against direct water spray. This is particularly relevant for devices exposed to rain, cleaning procedures, or splashing water in industrial or maritime settings.

Accurate testing procedures
At Sebert Group, we perform IPX5 tests in accordance with the internationally recognized IEC 60529 standard. Thanks to our precise testing procedures, manufacturers can demonstrate that their products are resistant to water spray and jets — essential for certification, quality control, and product longevity.
How Does the IPX5 Test Work?
The IPX5 test evaluates whether a product can resist water jets from various angles.
- Normale regenval en spatwater in buitenomgevingen.
- Opspattend water van wegen of industriële werkplaatsen.
- Schoonmaakprocessen waarbij waterstralen met lage druk worden gebruikt.
No full guarantee of water ingress protection.
A product that successfully passes the IPX5 test is resistant to normal rainfall and low-pressure water jets but is not designed for immersion. For applications involving continuous water exposure, higher IP ratings such as IPX6, IPX7, or IPX8 may be required.
The IPX5 test evaluates whether a product can resist water jets from various angles. During testing, the product is sprayed with a controlled jet of water for a minimum of three minutes.
After testing, the product is inspected to determine whether water ingress has occurred and whether the functionality remains unaffected.
Test Setup Specifications
- Test area dimensions (outdoor): Unlimited
- Water flow rate: 12.5 L/min (±5%)
During the test, the product is sprayed with a controlled water jet for a minimum of three minutes.
- Test method: Hose test using a nozzle positioned 2.5 to 3 meters from the product.
- Water flow: 12.5 litres per minute.
- Test duration: 1 minute per square metre, with a minimum of 3 minutes.
- Angles: The product must be sprayed from all practically possible directions. This means the test item is either rotated or the nozzle is moved around the product.
Why Is an IPX5 Rating Important?
An IPX5 rating is essential for devices and enclosures that are frequently exposed to splashing or sprayed water. This applies to various industries:
- Automotive: Protection for sensors and control units exposed to rain and road spray
- Industrial: Enclosures and control cabinets subject to cleaning processes involving water jets
- Consumer electronics: Wireless speakers, outdoor lighting, and smart home devices
- Medical equipment: Protection against moisture and disinfection procedures in clinical settings
By performing an IPX5 test, manufacturers can verify that their products are suitably water-resistant and capable of functioning in demanding environments.

IPX5 Testing at Sebert Group
At Sebert Group, IPX5 testing is conducted using specialized equipment that simulates realistic environmental conditions.
If the product does not meet the IPX5 requirements, our experts can advise on improvements such as enhanced sealing or moisture-resistant materials.
Our procedure includes:
✓ Preparing the test specimen and positioning it within the test area
✓ Spraying the product for at least 3 minutes using a hose delivering 12.5 L/min of water from a distance of 2.5 to 3 meters
✓ Inspecting the product for signs of water ingress and loss of functionality
✓ Providing a detailed test report including measurement data
