IPX4-test
Electronic devices and enclosures are exposed to splashing water and rain in many real-world environments. Think of outdoor lighting, control panels, vehicle electronics, and household appliances that come into occasional contact with water. The IPX4 test is a critical Ingress Protection (IP) test that determines whether a product can resist splashing water from any direction.

Compliance with applicable certification and quality standards.
At Sebert Group, we conduct IPX4 tests in accordance with the internationally recognized IEC 60529 standard. This ensures that your products meet the required certification and quality benchmarks, increasing their reliability and extending their service life.
How Does the IPX4 Test Work?
The IPX4 test evaluates whether a product is protected against water splashes from every angle. It builds upon the IPX3 test, which only assesses resistance to water sprayed at angles up to 60°.
To perform the test, we use either an oscillating spray arc or a handheld spray nozzle. Both simulate realistic exposure to rain and splashing water.
After testing, the product is inspected to determine whether water ingress occurred and whether the functionality remains intact.
Oscillating Arc Method:
- Water flow: 2.17 L/min (±5%)
- Test duration: 10 minutes; the specimen is rotated 90° after 5 minutes
- Spray angle: Arc oscillates 180° relative to vertical
Spray Nozzle Method:
- Water flow: 10 L/min (±5%)
- Test duration: 1 minute per m², with a minimum of 5 minutes
- Spray coverage: All practical sides and angles
Test Chamber Specifications
Our testing facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art systems that ensure precise and repeatable results. Specifications include:
Spray Arc Setup:
- Internal test space: 400 × 400 × 500 mm
- Water flow: 0.07 L/min (±5%) × 31 spray nozzles
Spray Nozzle Setup:
- External test space: Unlimited
- Water volume: 10 L/min (±5%)
- Water pressure: 0.05 to 0.15 MPa
These two setups allow us to simulate different test scenarios with high accuracy.

IPX4 classification is essential for products that are exposed to splashing water or rain. This applies to:
- Consumer electronics, such as wireless speakers and smart home devices
- Industrial equipment, like control panels in humid workspaces
- Medical devices, which are regularly cleaned with moist cloths or disinfectant sprays
- Vehicle electronics, including sensors and control systems exposed to splash zones
- Household appliances, such as kettles, kitchen devices, and wall sockets
Why is the IPX4 Test Important?
IPX4 classification is essential for products that are exposed to splashing water or rain.
Products with IPX4 certification can withstand water splashes from all directions but are not waterproof. For applications involving immersion or high-pressure jets, higher ratings such as IPX5 to IPX8 are required.

Benefits of an IPX4-Tested Product
A product that meets IPX4 standards offers enhanced protection against moisture, leading to longer operational life and fewer failures due to water ingress.
In addition, IPX4 testing helps reduce warranty claims and maintenance costs, improves customer satisfaction, and strengthens the market position of your product. In industries where certification is critical — such as electronics and automotive — IPX4 testing often plays a decisive role in development and quality assurance.
